As a child of the 80′s, obviously one of my all-time favorite characters is Jem (truly truly outrageous). In case you weren’t allowed to watch TV as a child, and therefore were a loser, Jem was a cartoon about a regular girl that ran a music label who could transform herself into a super cool rockstar through the use of special star-shaped earrings and a holograph machine (listen, these things don’t need to make sense). Someone recently pointed out to me the similarities between Jem and another, far inferior TV character, Hannah Montana, and quite honestly I’m outraged. I can honestly say that I know very little about Hannah Montana but apparently she’s a kid who, coincidentally, can also transform into a singer (although I strongly doubt her alter ego has awesome fluorescent hair or a rival band called the Misfits to battle). So more or less they are the exact same character, albeit one is awesome and outrageous and the other is just annoying, has big teeth and will be in rehab in 5 years — you decide which one is which. If Jem was around these days she would take Hannah Montana down in an old fashioned battle of the bands. Unfortunately itunes put her music label out of business and she turned to drugs and died of an overdose.
